Scene Analysis
Scene: Joe visits Jess
Major characters in the scene: Joe, Jess, Mr Bhamra, Mrs Bhamra
This scene mainly takes place in the Bhamra family’s living room and also a little bit outside their house.
Mr Bhamra, Mrs Bhamra and Jess are eating when Joe rings the doorbell. Pinky goes to open the door.
At the beginning, while Jess is serving tea, there is a brief viewing of Joe looking at Babaji. This informs us of the cultural differences of both Joe and Jess’ family even before they have spoken.
The 5 characters are sitting down in the living room and Joe and Mr Bhamra share looks and Mr Bhamra looks a little uncomfortable with Joe in their house. This sets a bit of tension in the air. Also, it is seen that Mr Bhamra, Mrs Bhamra and Pinky are all sitting together, whereas Jess is sitting closer to Joe. This is sort of the teams they are on. Mr and Mrs Bhamra and Pinky against Joe and Jess.
Joe starts talking and he apologises to Mr and Mrs Bhamra for not encouraging Jess to tell her parents that she was playing football. Mrs Bhamra seems a little annoyed and is a little bit angry when she says “No, we didn’t” after Joe says that he didn’t realise that they didn’t know Jess was playing football. The expression on her face indicates that she doesn’t quite understand Joe’s reason for being here and doesn’t seem very welcoming to him. Joe then explains how Jess has great potential and wants her to continue. Mr Bhamra responds by saying “I think we know better our daughter’s potential.” He continues, explaining how Jess doesn’t have time for football and will be starting university soon. He starts telling a story about how he was discriminated and made fun of when he played cricket. He expresses his fury through his actions, volume of his voice and facial expressions. At this point, Joe has low status and Mr Bhamra has high status. This is because, after his offer being rejected, Joe is now desperate to find a way to convince Jess’ parents to let her play football and says that things have changed now and its different. Mr Bhamra has high status because the decision lies in his hands and his decision affects the outcome of everything.
(Throughout this section the camera shots vary, mostly being close up head shots of the person talking and also the occasional mid shot. The mid shots show the expressions and reactions of the characters. There are also a few wide shots showing the entire family and Joe seated in the living room.)
Mr Bhamra then says “I don’t want you to build up Jessminder’s hopes, she will only end up disappointed like me.” This quote is the effect of the bullying Mr Bhamra received as a young boy. He is protecting Jess, in thinking that the same will happen to her.
Jess interrupts and also tries to convince her parents that she should play, by saying that Nasser Hussein was captain of the England cricket team and he was Asian, but her mother explains that their families were different. Jess shows her disappointment through her actions and expression.
Soon, Joe leaves and Jess walks out with him. Joe tells her that they had been invited to play in Germany this weekend and that it was shame she would miss it. Jess is surprised and a bit envious that she doesn’t get to play. Joe then comments that sometimes parents don’t always know what’s best for you. By saying this, he is suggesting that maybe her parents haven’t made the right decision for her.
(The camera shots in this section outside are wide shots showing Joe and Jess’ entire bodies and also part of their house/front garden. As the characters walk forward it becomes a two-shot. Then there are close up shots and also over-the-shoulder shots when they are speaking.)

Scene: Pinky's Wedding Misunderstanding
Main Characters: Jess, Jules, Pinky, Mr and Mrs Bhamra
Setting: At Jules’ house, bus stop, at Jess’ house
Jess and Jules went to the bus stop after meeting up at Jules’ house and were laughing about what Jules’s mother had said earlier. As a kind gesture of goodbye they hug. In that moment Pinky’s mother in law drove by and saw them hugging. She thought Jules was a boy and that they were kissing. She then drove straight to Jess’ parents and informed them of the situation. It was because of this small misunderstanding that the wedding was then called off.
Pinky is crying when Jess enters the house and Jess politely greets her parents-in-law. They then exit leaving Jess, Pinky and Mr and Mrs Bhamra. Pinky then continues by yelling at Jess, with her mother supporting her in this saying that she ruined her sisters life. In this small portion of the scene, Jess has a low status because she is being shouted at and is confused with the situation. Jess is now very confused and denies what they are telling her. Her father then asks her to swear on Babaji’s name. This gesture shows how important Babaji is in their daily lives and that they turn to him in times like this. The entire family is distraught with the situation they are in.
This entire scene shows the importance of morals in Sikh/Indian culture. If Jess was actually kissing a boy, this shows repercussions and consequences of such an action. Her sister’s whole wedding would be cancelled.
The dominant characters in this scene would be Jess and Pinky because they are what you draw your eyes to as soon as we enter the scene. Then the subsidiary would be Mr and Mrs Bhamra and the parents in law because it’s what your eyes draw to next.
The shots taken in this scene are mostly medium shots which mean they’re from the knees up and the camera was on eyelevel so with both of these techniques it focuses on the people involved in the misunderstanding so you know who is involved but it also shows that it’s a dramatic scene. It also shows the different emotions in this scene. For example, Pinky is upset that the wedding has been called off because of the misunderstanding that Jess has started, and on the other hand Jess is a bit confused at first about what all the drama was. Until they confront her and she’s mad that her family actually believes that she was kissing someone at the bus stop. So the shots and the camera angle are very important to show what’s happening and the characters reactions, emotions and the scenes mood.
The scene is set in Jess’s house and the colours that are used in the house are mostly dull colours. The colours in the house almost reflect on the characters lifestyle. The framing of the scene is a little tight but not too tight that the characters don’t have any room to move in the frame. The characters placement in the scene started from the corners of the frame but further into the scene the characters started to move to the centre of the frame a bit more which almost exaggerates the drama that’s present in the scene. The way Jess enters the scene and when she pauses near the stairs and her facial expression shows that she was wondering what was going on because she saw Pinky in tears and the in laws talking to her parents and they both had a disturbed look on their faces. It also makes you wonder what could be happening and what the problem was. The space between the characters was a personal distance which means that the characters were not too far apart but just the right distance apart for a dramatic conversation.
After the misunderstanding, everything starts to fall apart when Pinky reveals Jess’ secret that she has still been playing football. Pinky goes on about how Jess has ruined her life, but her mother explains how she actually knew Pinky was sneaking around with Teetu. Pinky is very ashamed and this is clearly shown through her expressions.
This entire scene gives the film a dramatic edge and a sort of twist. It was very unexpected and shows how everything can unfold so quickly after such a small misunderstanding.
